Web Accessibility: Why You Should Care with Colleen Gratzer

Do you think you don’t need to know about web accessibility?
Do you talk to your clients about the risks of not having their site accessible?
Do you think your site is ok, because you passed an automated checker?
Do you think your site is fine, because you chose an accessible theme?

You might be surprised at the answers.

This week I want to introduce you to my friend, Colleen Gratzer, a podcaster, educator, and a designer. She also has built a community for designers like me who want to design with accessibility in mind. I have taken her web accessible course and she has another one about branding and how we need to think about accessibility as we begin NOT at the end.

The Questions

  1. Colleen, can you give everybody a little background about your start in design and what you focus on? How long have you been in business and what services do you provide? Who do you normally serve (audience)?
  2. You didn’t start out as an Accessibility Specialist but your business shifted when was that and how did it change the trajectory of your business? Was the shift slow or did it blow up your business all at once?
  3. What are some of the common myths about accessibility? Or common misconceptions you hear from other web designers? (My theme is accessible…)
  4. What are some of your biggest pet peeves in regards to web accessibility? (overlays, alt text, automated checkers)
  5. How does accessibility affect SEO? Anything else we might be overlooking?
  6. What is a disability that might be overlooked in regards to designing web accessible sites? Who might be someone who we might not think of as having a disability but would fall into this group? (Temporary ailments… not just people with screen users, or blind people.)
  7. Why is it best to bring this to your client’s attention?
  8. What are some ways you educate your clients about the importance of having their website, digital, and print designed for accessibility?
  9. When should someone start the accessibility phase? Should it be incorporated from the very beginning in the branding stages, why?
  10. How do you stay up on all these changes? What kinds of things are you reading, watching, attending on a monthly or weekly basis?
  11. You also do a LOT of document remediation for businesses. Can you explain what this is and why people hire you to do it?
  12. How do you recharge? What inspires you?
  13. What is your greater purpose? How are you living that out today?
  14. What is next?
